The History of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Rho Mu Chapter

The journey of the creation of the Rho Mu chapter on the campus of the University of Richmond began in 1990 with the colonization process. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. requires a total of 12 members to charter a chapter. Several years followed with disappointment of reaching the required number to charter however, we were determined to achieve our dream of starting a new chapter. In the fall of 1994, six lovely ladies -Stacy Garrett, Natasha Jones, Shawri King, Camille Cade, Genienne Samuels, and Kayren Shoffner- formed the interest group, "The Precious Pearls" of Alpha Kappa Alpha. These women were determined to make 1995 the year Rho Mu would be chartered.

With the help of other Alpha Kappa Alpha women, including Dr. Tinina Cade and Soror Maxine Black, this became a reality. In the spring of 1995, seven women joined Alpha Kappa Alpha making the total on campus 13 and therefore enough to charter a chapter. These seven women were Jaime Carter, Tanya Goins, Yvette Knight, Ivy Simmons, Katrina Simon, Cherita Smith, and Diane Williams. On Sept. 10, 1995, the interest group the Precious Pearls became the Rho Mu chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Since that wonderful day, Rho Mu has worked to serve the community in many ways illustrating Alpha Kappa Alpha's theme, "Service To All Mankind", to the fullest.
